One of the best things about marketing is
that there is no such thing as a typical day. I work as long as I
need to - you can't be a clock watcher in our industry! As I don't
have a typical day, I can't really detail what I would normally do
from one hour to the next, but I'll have a go at describing what
it's like to do my job.
At the moment there are three of us in the
marketing team. We have a mixture of short deadlines, long term
projects, recurring strategies, lots of ad hoc work and, fairly
frequently, very, very short deadlines! I do try to have a bit of a
routine which involves doing project work when I am at my best
(i.e. in the morning) but it's not always possible, so project and
time management is always a challenge.
As the marketing manager, I have overall
responsibility for our marketing plan, objectives, budget, and
activities, but we've got a very open, sharing team ethic with a
real mix of abilities and skills. Therefore, the way we work is
often to assign the most qualified person to project manage each
major task. With that approach, there needs to be a lot of trust in
the team. When we built our new website, our (very talented) web
designer was handing out the tasks to the rest of us. He was
sometimes frustrated as pressing tasks and deadlines (sometimes his
own), not to mention technical glitches, got in the way of this
project. But that's the way of it and we have to juggle these
things. We have to rise to the challenge of that, or we wouldn't
ever finish anything!
We have a few different sources of work, and
they all compete with each other for our time, which is why we're
always very busy. The first is our annual marketing plan, which we
produce and try to stick to. Then we also have client work and our
helpdesk role for internal customers. There's quite a lot of daily
management of media suppliers too, be they magazines, printers, job
boards, or whatever. We have some fun establishing what we should
and shouldn't be doing for other people and our priority is to
deliver our marketing plan for our number one customer - the
business - embodied by the MD. It's usually pretty hectic, but I
love it!
One thing I particularly like about working at
ARM is that you are empowered to make things happen. If you're
positive and embrace the challenges, it can be incredibly
rewarding, and I can honestly say I really enjoy and am proud of my
job. There are a lot of great people here, which can make a big
difference if you're having a tough day.
I've spoken to other CIM members or affiliates who get involved
with only one element of marketing. On the marketing team here, we
have to make it all happen. We get involved with everything from
industry analysis and marketing planning and strategy, to print
buying, media, PR, web design, search engine marketing, direct
marketing, advertising, PR, partnerships, events, editorials,
client campaigns, competitor analysis, online newsletters,
collateral and corporate brand, and lots, lots, more. I once wrote
a five year candidate attraction plan for a client as a short
deadline requirement, in a straight 14 hour session. It was almost
like being a student again...
I really enjoy my job. The team all get on really well, and we
all enjoy the buzz of having loads to do and seeing the effect our
work can have.
